I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found a classical guitar teacher like Mr Tan. Having been his student from Primary 1 to Primary 3, I discontinued lessons for a period of time to focus on my core CCA in Chineses string instrument. However, after having my passion for classical music and classical guitar reignited in Secondary school, I approached Mr Tan again to further pursue classical guitar. With his continued guidance and teaching, I was able to greatly improve my tone, left and right hand technique. In addition, he meticulously checks my playing posture, nails, and fingering for certain sections of the many pieces that he has taught me. He is extremely patient and caring, but also emphasises punctuality, and above all, the will to constantly improve.
Through his lessons which I greatly look forward to every week, I am able to work on my musicianship, as Mr Tan would always provide me with better understanding of the different pieces by putting them into context and stepping into the shoes of the composer. Thus, with such a perspective, I am able to play the pieces more expressively and authentically.
I am honoured to have attained distinction for my recent ABRSM Grade 8 Exam at the age of 14, and without Mr Tan’s tutelage, I am certain that I would have never been able to achieve such a result. Having such an experienced instructor like Mr Tan has, without a doubt, invaluably enriched my musical journey, and I would not hesitate in recommending him to anyone looking to start their classical guitar journey, or to improve on their skills as a seasoned player. In the 5 years that I have come under the careful guidance of Mr Tan, I can confidently say he is one of the best and most professional teachers in the field. Every week, he comes to lessons with a deep and comprehensive knowledge on the piece he is teaching. In addition, his flawless live renditions of the pieces radiate musical flair. His teaching methods are also extremely easy to learn and pick up. From patiently marking out the fingering on the sheet music, to carefully running through basic and fundamental techniques, lessons with Mr Tan are productive and meaningful.
The best teachers are the ones who seek to inspire students to better themselves in their pursuit of the love for music. In these 5 years, I have come to admire Mr Tan for his unwavering dedication to continue to improve in his craft. He is never satisfied with the status quo. Mr Tan is very knowledgeable, and helped me improve tremendously especially when it comes to musicianship, interpretation and technique. Although with any instrument there is a good bit of technique to master, with him it is always enjoyable and I have seen significant improvement in my playing. He shows his exceptional skills and really gives me something to aspire for. Mr Tan tailored his lesson plan to my needs and searched out pieces that were instructive and challenging, yet not beyond my skills. Mr Tan has more than 35 years experience on teaching classical guitar. I was amazed by his guitar skill at the first lesson. He adjusted my posture and fingering that made me improve in my pieces. Mr Tan is a very patient and responsible teacher that not only teach for money but also want to see improvement on my skill and my exam pieces. I tried to learn everything and now I can perform my pieces better than before and my tone become clearer and there is better harmony.
